Money To Stop Sexual Harassment On Women?

Amidst the uproar of BJP regarding Coal Scam, Loksabha today has passed a bill, which is intended to protect women from sexual harassment at work place. But what looks like a joke is the punishment offered to offenders.

Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Bill, 2010, was passed without discussion today. As per this law, any harassment shall be punishable with a fine of up to Rs. 50,000, while repeated acts will lead to higher penalties. Is the government saying that women could be harassed sexually and if a fine is paid then the entire case will be wiped off? Looks exactly the same and with no proper punishment to the offenders, this bill looks like a mere joke. Every day many women, say it corporate companies, government offices or domestic workers at households are getting harassed by their subordinates and superiors and how could rulers think that fine alone can solve the issue.

Women right activists are saying that strict jailing and other severe punishments will keep the harassers at bay, but not these fines.
