MPs fight in the presence of PM

The image of MPs got a beating on Wednesday with two members of the Rajya Sabha fighting with each other during the time when the bill to allow reservations in promotions for SCs and STs in government job was tabled.

The two MPs involved in the scuffle belong to Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). Deputy Chairman PJ Kurein asked the government to move the Constitution (117th Amendment) bill, which was strictly opposed by Akilesh Yadav's SP. Members of SP stood on their feet, raised slogans opposing the bill. Meanwhile, an SP member Naresh Agarwal tried to enter the Well. A BSP member Avatar Singh Karimpuri who followed him grabbed the SP member by his collar and pulled him back to prevent him from entering the Well. Other members immediately intervened and held back Karimpuri.

The situation in Rajya Sabha appeared to have got out of control for a few minutes. Marshals were asked to take the situation under control and the two leaders have been brought back to their seats. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh remained as a silent spectator in this entire episode.

Amid high drama, the Bill was introduced in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. If passed, this bill will permit the government to to continue the reservation in promotion of SCs and STs as it existed since 1995.
