Now doctors at AIIMS’ JPN Trauma Centre can access medical reports like CT scans, X-rays and MRI results on the go. The software is called Picture Archive Communication System (PACS), which allows docs to check out their patients’ report at all times.
Chief of IT services and consultant in Neurology Dr Deepak Aggarwal said,“Our limited manpower cannot be at the hospital 24×7. This new system helps specialists assist resident doctors even after duty hours.” This will allow junior docs to administer the necessary treatment faster without the presence of senior doctors. A team of nurses, “nursing informatics” staff, monitors the data entry mechanism for every patient from the hospital’s emergency to ensure no patient is missed. The move means no additional staff had to be hired to launch the new system. The system will be also be expanded to include a web-based monitoring system for patients. This, doctors said, will help reduce any chance of error in blood transfusions.
“We will maintain barcodes of patients who need blood transfusion. Before giving a blood bag for a patient, the patient’s barcode will be matched at the blood bank. Using bar codes will help us check any errors,” Dr Aggarwal said.
“We are doing real-time monitoring of patients to reduce the waiting time. While the CT procedure itself takes 30 seconds, all the formalities and intra-hospital movement was consuming a lot of time. In the past one year that we started monitoring this, the time has been cut down drastically,” Dr Aggarwal said. It is understood that AIIMS, Delhi will help other upcoming AIIMS institutions to introduce these IT-enabled features and train the staff.
