India Asks Bharti Airtel to Halt Some 3G Services

BANGALORE—Bharti Airtel Ltd. said India's telecommunications department has asked it to stop offering third-generation mobile-phone services through cross-carrier roaming pacts and explain its alleged rule violation.
Bharti Airtel, Idea Cellular Ltd. and the local unit of U.K.-based Vodafone Group PLC in July last year signed agreements that allowed their customers to use 3G services in areas where at least one of the companies had the bandwidth to facilitate the services.
India's Department of Telecommunications, however, believes these tie-ups breach conditions included in the permits issued to the wireless operators ...
