Ind vs Eng: Cook, Pietersen frustrate Indian spinners

NEW DELHI: Captain Alastair Cook reached his 30th half-century soon after tea to steady England on the second day of the second Test against India at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday.

Scorecard

Cook and Kevin Pietersen took England first innings score to 77/2 at tea after Pragyan Ojha dismissed Nick Compton and Jonathan Trott in his successive overs.

Ojha got rid of Trott for a duck with an arm ball that drifted in, Trott went back to work it away but missed and was hit flush in front.

Ojha gave India the first breakthrough when he had Nick Compton caught by Virender Sehwag at first slip.

Ojha tossed one up outside off, Compton lunged forward to defend but the ball spun away and took the outside edge. The ball went low to Sehwag at first slip who took a good low catch.

Compton and Cook batted cautiously for their 66-run stand.

Cook and Compton safely negotiated four overs before lunch after Monty Panesar took five wickets and Graeme Swann scalped four to bowl out India for 327 runs.

Swann flighted a delivery outside off that spun in a long way, Zaheer prodded at it but missed as the ball went off the pads to Jonathan Bairstow at short leg. Zaheer looked a bit miffed as umpire Aleem Dar said nothing but after a while, raised his finger to end the Indian first innings.

Cheteshwar Pujara was finally dismissed by England as Graeme Swann had him stumped by Matt Prior.

Pujara charged down the pitch but missed the delivery that went straight on and was stumped after hitting 12 fours in his 135-run knock.

Graeme Swann took his 200th wicket when he trapped Harbhajan Singh plumb in front of the wicket.

Swann flighted a delivery outside off, Harbhajan walked far too across his stumps and missed his sweep and was struck on the pads.

Monty Panesar registered his 11th five-wicket haul when he dismissed R Ashwin leg before wicket.

Panesar bowled a quicker delivery that landed outside off, Ashwin went back for the cut but was beaten by pace and was hit on the pads.

Ashwin played well for 68 and added 111 runs with Pujara. This is Panesar's first five-wicket haul against India.

The day's play started with Cheteshwar Pujara and Ashwin resuming the Indian first innings.

On Day One, Pujara and Ashwin helped the team out of a hole and helped them finish at 266/6 at stumps. However, until the two got together, it appeared for most of the afternoon that the hosts could've perished below 250.
