Delhi gangrape: Trial to begin from Jan 3, 2013, hearing on a daily basis, say MHA sources
New Delhi: Coming under serious attack from raging protests in Delhi over the gangrape of a young woman, the government has set, according to the sources, January 3, 2013 as the date to begin the trial of the case that has taken the nation by a storm. Sources in the Union Home Ministry have said that the case would be heard on a daily basis.
The sources added that more fast-track courts would be set up in Delhi and rapes cases in the national capital would now be heard on a daily basis. Modalities of the plan would be worked out by the Delhi High Court administration.
The Delhi government has been pushing for setting up more fast-track courts where cases relating to crime against women could be heard on a daily basis.
A representative of a women delegation, which met Delhi Lt Governor Tejinder Khanna on Monday, said that they made various suggestions to him like improving street lights, banning tainted glasses in cars and bus.
The ferocity of the protests in the national capital over the gangrape of a 23-year-old woman in a moving bus appear to have caught the government by surprise. Thousands of people took to the streets at the weekend protesting against the government and demanding capital punishment for the culprits.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also addressed the nation on Monday and assured that action would be taken. He appealed for peace and said as a father of three daughters himself he feels for the survivor like any other Indian does.
