Following dengue deaths, BMC starts vector control in Malwani
The civic authorities in Mumbai have initiated vector control activities such as fogging in Malwani following the deaths in the Jafari family and subsequent public outrage. Soon after Tariq’s death, 7-8 fever cases were found during a quick survey of the area carried out by the BMC. Tariq Jafri (32), a tax agent residing in society no 136 in Malwani, succumbed to dengue shock syndrome on Wednesday, while his four-year-old daughter Tasneem lost her fight against the mosquito-borne infection on Sunday morning.
Denying the claims by locals that about 10 residents of the area were affected by dengue in the past few weeks, an official said no dengue cases were discovered. According to statistics, dengue cases have plunged in Mumbai since October with 166 cases being reported in November as against a figure of 237 in October and 242 in September. According to official figures, only 28 people tested positive for dengue in the first nine days of December.
Arguing that the dengue outbreak is a national issue, Manisha Mhaiskar, additional municipal commissioner said, ‘It is not just Mumbai’s problem. States like Tamil Nadu and West Bengal have more cases than Maharashtra. Even Pondicherry has more than 1,000 cases, though its population is smaller than Mumbai’s.’
With over 2,000 cases registered, the incidence of dengue cases was higher in Delhi while Mumbai registered 935. However, Mumbai has recorded more dengue deaths than Delhi with five people succumbing to dengue this year as against four in Delhi.
