Mayawati opposes FDI in retail, mum on vote
New Delhi/Lucknow: Once again Mayawati has decided to play the waiting game. Bahujan Samaj Party supremo on Monday announced that her party is opposed to FDI in retail but is still mulling over whether to support the government when the proposal will come up for voting in Parliament.
Addressing a press conference, Mayawati said, “Foreign investment is important for the country but the sectors in which in it should be allowed is also important. If foreign direct investment is to hit the domestic markets, then it should be looked into it.”
“By inviting FDI in retail and that too with no clause that mandates use of local produce, it would be not right for the government to go ahead with it. Our party and most people of the country think that the farmers, traders, small industries will be hit by FDI in retail,” she said, adding, “It will directly affect the poor and middle class people of the country. Our country will become an economic slave through these foreign companies.”

“Small farmers will be badly hit and they won’t be able to survive. People also fear that the foreign companies will bring in cheap goods from outside and flood our markets,” she said.
“The Centre’s contention that the foreign companies will only operate in only cities with a population of over 10 lakhs, but our party doesn’t believe in this premise as the foreign companies themselves want to operate only in such areas,” she said.
“Our advice to the Centre is that it should implement the FDI policy in Congress ruled states and review its impact in a specified time frame. But as of today, with having not seen the benefits of the FDI policy we don’t support it as of now,” Mayawati said.
