Thousands seek shelter as Bopha makes landfall

BEIJING, Dec. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- Typhoon Bopha has made landfall on the southern Philippinesisland of Mindanao. It crossed the island of 10 million people with gusts of up to 210 kilometers per hour and brought heavy rain.
Ahead of its arrival, thousands of people in coastal villages and along rivers across the southern Philippines fled their homes for government shelters. Authorities suspended sea travel in high-risk areas and halted gold mining in a mountain town notorious for deadly landslides.
It’s the strongest storm to hit the country this year. It is expected to make its way across southern and central provinces before blowing out into the South China Sea on Thursday.
