Sehwag dropped, Pujara part of India's One-day scheme
NEW DELHI: Opener Virender Sehwag was dropped from the 15-member team for the first three One-day matches against England starting at Rajkot on January 11. Sehwag's continued poor form and India's ODI series loss to Pakistan prompted the selection committee - headed bySandip Patil - to take the decision.
Cheteshwar Pujara, after his commendable form in the Tests against England, has been rewarded with an ODI spot.
TOI reported on Saturday how the axe was looming over Sehwag's head following his run of poor scores. Surprisingly, apart from Sehwag, the rest of the squad which played against Pakistan has been retained.
Sehwag's sacking is on expected line as he has only manage 238 runs from last 10 innings. His fielding abilities too went against him in the selection meeting, according to sources. Apparently, the selectors wanted to see Sehwag perform in the third ODI against Pakistan in Delhi on Sunday but Indian skipper MS Dhoni dropped him from the playing XI, arguing that Ajinkya Rahane's time had come.
The team management, it is learnt, is intent on giving Mumbai batsman Rahane a longer run in the upcoming England series. This means Sehwag could be out of the ODI scheme of things for a long while.
However, there's good news for Sehwag in that selectors are still willing to retain him as opener in Test matches. There is a strong feeling within the committee that Sehwag's aggressive approach could be the answer to Australia's pacers.
By dropping Sehwag, the board has sent out a strong signal to all the non-performing stars.
The selectors also planned was to drop Rohit Sharma from the squad, but due to a lack of options, he has survived the axe. On the bowling front, the four pace bowlers and three spinners retained their places in the team. Sources said that the selectors were impressed with the current showing of the pace brigade at Ferozeshah Kotla on Sunday and also discussed some of the names who are currently a part of India-A team.
Squad for first 3 ODIs: MS Dhoni (captain), Gautam Gambhir, Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, R. Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Amit Mishra, Ishant Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ashok Dinda, Shami Ahmed.
