An Arizona man missing for a week was found dead Monday in southern Oregon, authorities say.
Johnathan Croom, 18, of Apache Junction, Ariz., was discovered in a wooded area around 6:30 p.m. about 1,000 feet from where his green 2000 Honda CRV was abandoned off Yokum Road in Riddle, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said. His death is being investigated as a suicide.
No further details have been released in the incident.
David Croom, the man's father, told deputies his son borrowed the vehicle to drive to Washington to visit a friend. Johnathan Croom was supposed to return to Arizona to start college and last spoke with his relatives about two weeks ago.
Text messages between Johnathan Croom and a friend show he may have wanted to run away, deputies said.
The teen talked with his parents about Christopher McCandless, whose disappearance in the Alaska wilderness was documented in the book "Into the Wild," deputies said. McCandless was eventually was found dead inside an abandoned bus in Alaska.
