Acer unveils its 10in Iconia A3 tablet ahead of IFA

Monday, 2 September 2013

TAIWANESE HARDWARE MAKER Acer has unveiled a 10in Iconia A3 tablet ahead of the IFA electronics trade show in Germany.

To pip its rivals to the post, Acer showed off the 10in slate two days before the kickoff of IFA, where hardware heavyweights Sony and Samsung are expected to launch a number of tablets and smartphones.

The Iconia A3 has an LED-backlit 10.1in IPS display with WXGA 1,280x800 resolution and a 16:10 aspect ratio. Powered by a quad-core 1.2GHz ARM Cortex A7 processor and running Google's Android 4.2 Jelly Bean mobile operating system (OS), the Iconia A3 will deliver nine hours of video playback and good mobile gaming performance, Acer claims.

Acer said the Iconia A3 tablet also has some new touch and display features, such as "Intellispin", which is an enhancement to the tablet's screen image rotation. "Even when lying flat, the screen image will rotate to match the tablet's orientation when turned," Acer said.

Measuring 10.2mm thick and weighing just short of 600g, the Iconia A3 will come with a microHDMI port for connecting the tablet to external displays, as well as standard WiFi network connectivity, Bluetooth 4.0 and the option of a 3G mobile connection.

On the back of the 10in tablet is a 5MP camera, which can be used to take snapshots at full video resolution while recording a video.

The Iconia A3 includes dual speakers, which sit on either side of the device to create what Acer says is "a virtual sound box for stereo sound effects".

Acer hasn't announced UK pricing, but said that the Iconia A3 will be available with 16GB or 32GB of internal storage, both versions expandable via microSD card.

The 16GB, WiFi-only version of the Iconia A3 will be available in Europe sometime in October at €249, or around £220. The 3G version will also be available in Europe by early November, priced at €299, or around £270. Acer has not announced pricing for the 32GB models yet.

Along with the Iconia A3 tablet, Acer also unveiled new colours in addition to black for its earlier Android tablet releases, the Iconia A1 and Iconia B1. While the 7.9in Iconia A1 tablet will also be available in white, grey and gold, Acer's slightly smaller 7in Iconia B1 tablet will also be available in both blue and red. µ
