DHAKA, Bangladesh – Bangladesh's Supreme Court has sentenced a leader of an opposition political party to death for committing crimes against humanity during the nation's independence war against Pakistan in 1971.
The Jamaat-e-Islami party leader, Abdul Quader Mollah, was found guilty in February and sentenced to life in prison. That sentence was appealed by both the defense and prosecution.
On Tuesday, a five-member panel headed by Chief Justice M. Muzammel Hossain ruled that Mollah be put to death.
The earlier sentence led to protests across the country as by those who said it was too lenient. Mollah and his supporters say the case against him is politically motivated.
Bangladesh says 3 million people were killed and 200,000 women were raped during the 1971 war by Pakistani soldiers aided by local collaborators.
