Moments after shooting his record-tying 59 on Friday, Jim Furyk asked a scoring official if he led the BMW Championship.
He did, tied with Brandt Snedeker after 36 holes. And so the question for Saturday at Conway Farms isn't what Furyk can do for an encore --- 59s have only happened six times on the PGA Tour --- but can he win this tournament?
"It's difficult sometimes to come back from a really low round," Furyk said.
The weather conditions could help. Saturday's third-round forecast called for warmer temperatures and calmer winds, which could call for more fireworks, if not history.
"I think (Saturday) will be a birdie-fest out here," said Wheaton Warrenville South product Kevin Streelman, one of five golfers sitting five shots behind the leaders. "It should be fun for the fans."
As always, plenty of story lines are available. Tiger Woods' two-stroke penalty assessed after his Friday round for a rules violation on No. 1 dropped him into a pairing with Sergio Garcia, who isn't a Christmas card partner. It's the first round the two have played since Garcia made his insensitive "fried chicken" comment in reference to Woods in May. Garcia apologized in June.
Young gun Jordan Spieth is hanging around, five shots back. Zach Johnson is in solo third just three shots off the pace. And Furyk and Snedeker, who will tee off at 12:50 p.m., will try to continue their torrid play.
"I still have a good weekend in front of me," Furyk said. "I'm excited for that."
