HOUSTON (AP) -- The government shutdown has hit hard in Houston, home to the Johnson Space Center and other federal agencies that have left thousands of workers furloughed.
Houston is also the hometown of Sen. Ted Cruz, the tea party firebrand who helped spark the shutdown.
Cruz has remained a hero to many conservative activists. And even some now going without paychecks in Houston because of furloughs say they are willing to stick with Cruz.
They say they want to stand with him against the nation's new health care law and the growth of government in general.
Others, though, question whether his tactics have gone too far.
