Explosion at UC Berkeley Caused by Power Failure

Tuesday, 1 October 2013

An explosion triggered by a power failure rocked the University of California at Berkeley campus Monday evening, resulting in a few minor injuries, officials there said.

The incident took place at 6:45 p.m. in an underground power vault on a central part of the campus, injuring as many as four people—including one who was transported to a local hospital for medical attention, said Andy Pino, a spokesman for the university.

Mr. Pino said the blast, which witnesses said sent up a huge fireball, was caused by a power failure that hit the campus a few hours earlier. School officials ordered the campus evacuated after the explosion and closed evening classes and science laboratories. Power was being restored to the campus by about 8 p.m.

The explosion took place on the first day that Janet Napolitano, former secretary of Homeland Security, began her tenure as president of the University of California. Mr. Pino said Ms. Napolitano wasn't on campus at the time.
