USA TODAY Sports college football staff picks

Saturday, 5 October 2013

An uneventful first trimester of the college football season is in the books, and October is upon us. While there have been some memorable games, the notable story line from the first five weeks is that little has changed among the top contenders for the national championship.

Just four of the top 10 from the preseason poll have lost a game and three of those defeats (Georgia, South Carolina and Texas A&M) were at the hands of other top 10 teams. Only Florida fell to a non-title contender, and that game was at Miami, which is unbeaten and ranked No. 14.

No. 3 Ohio State, fresh off its win against Wisconsin, goes on the road to face unbeaten Northwestern. The 15th-ranked Wildcats should provide a raucous environment in what should be the toughest test away from home for the Buckeyes.

The other big showdown this weekend is in the Pac-12 with No. 5 Stanford hosting No. 18 Washington. The Huskies have looked dominant so far, winning four games by 116 points. The Cardinal, however, will easily be Washington's toughest test as the team tries to continue its resurgence under Steve Sarkisian.

Other notable games include surprising Maryland traveling to No. 8 Florida State, Georgia visiting Tennessee after its big win against LSU and Notre Dame hoping to avoid a 2-3 start when it faces No. 24 Arizona State.
