Plus other features including external keyboard support

A new firmware update for the Wii U introduces the ability to play Wii games on the Gamepad.

While the update allows users to access Wii Mode on the Gamepad, the pad's controls will not be compatible with the titles. A WiiMote will be required to play the games.

The update also introduces the ability to automatically download recommended software and demoes from the Nintendo eShop. The function can be toggled in the 'Internet' menu.

Web browsing has been streamlined, with site specific username and passwords now savable in the browser, and .PDF access introduced. Users can now launch the browser mid-game in order to upload in-game screenshots.

External keyboard compatability now features, as well as Dolby Pro Logic II Surround Sound for Wii games.

A Nintendo UK exec last week admitted that many consumers are still unaware that the Wii U is a brand new console, amid poor sales for the console.

160,000 Wii U units were sold globally between April and July.
