Nokia to pay Rs 67,000 for selling defective mobile

NEW DELHI: Nokia India has been directed by a city district consumer forum to pay Rs 67,000 to one of its customers for selling him a "defective" cell phone and then failing to repair it or refund its price.

The South-II District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum held Nokia guilty of indulging in unfair trade practice for selling a defective phone and then failing to repair it or refund its price since September 2007 when it was first taken for repairs by Delhi resident and complainant Rohan Arora.

The forum also held retailer Luthra Communications guilty of resorting to unfair trade practice.

"When the complainant (Rohan Arora) left the defective piece of good to its manufacturer, it was incumbent upon it either to remove its defect to satisfaction of the complainant or to refund its (mobile's) amount with interest. But opposite party did not bother to resolve such genuine request of the complainant.

"Hence we hold both the opposite parties (Nokia and the retailer) guilty for gross deficiency in service and unfair trade practice and direct them to jointly and severally refund the amount of the handset amounting to Rs 37,000 and to further pay a compensation of Rs 25,000 for supplying a defective good and thereafter not replacing the same or to remove its defect to his satisfaction."

"They shall also pay a sum of Rs 5,000 towards the cost of the proceedings," the bench presided by MC Mehra said.

Arora in his complaint had alleged that the phone, a Nokia E 90 Communicator bought in July 2007 for Rs 37,000, had poor incoming and outgoing audio quality right from the beginning.

He had returned the mobile to Nokia in September 2007 to replace it or repair the defect, he had said adding that the handset was replaced with an old instrument which also had the same problem.

He had also alleged that Nokia flatly refused to refund the cost of the phone. Nokia was proceeded against ex-parte as it had appeared only once before the forum.

HP has introduced three Windows 8 devices at IFA 2012 – the Envy x2 laptop-tablet hybrid, the SpectreXT TouchSmart Ultrabook, and the Envy Touchsmart Ultrabook 4. Pricing and availability details have only been revealed for the Spectre XT ($1,400 and December), though the other two are expected to arrive around the same time.

The 8.5mm-thick aluminium-built HP Envy x2 is a Windows 8 laptop-tablet hybrid with an 11-inch IPS (1,366x768 pixel, 400 nits brightness) display, and runs on an Intel Atom Clover Trail processor. It features 64GB of built-in storage, complete with a microSD card, and a full-size SD slot. An 8MP rear camera rounds of the specs, apart from two USB ports, and one HDMI port. It is expected to offer roughly 9-10 hours of battery life. The Envy x2 will also feature NFC connectivity, apart from Beats Audio sound. A keyboard dock will ship with the device, and an optional stylus is available.

As for the other two announcements, HP’s basically added a touchscreen and its TouchSmart technology to two of its ultrabooks, the Envy 4 and SpectreXT. The Envy 4 retains its 14-inch form factor, now weighs 4.77 pounds, and is 23mm thick. The originally 13-inch SpectreXT has been given a 15-inch Full HD TouchSmart display with the refresh, now weighs 4.77 pounds and is 22mm thick.

The new 15-inch SpectreXT TouchSmart Ultrabook will run on Ivy Bridge processors, and comes in SSD, and hybrid hard drive (conventional plus 32GB SSD) options. It features two USB 3.0 ports, one USB 2.0 port, a 3.5mm audio jack, a memory card reader, and an Ethernet port. HP’s also bundled a 2-year Norton security software subscription, apart from Adobe Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements. Read our review of the Envy 4 for a better idea of its specifications.

Everyone knows by now that Akshay Kumar and his co-star of two films, Sonakshi Sinha share a great working rapport. Sonakshi has immense respect for the actor and Akshay thinks Sonakshi has a lot of potential. Recently, Sonakshi even agreed to be a part of a special song, 'Go Go Govinda' in his new production house Grazing Goat Pictures' maiden film, OMG OH MY GOD! starring Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal.

From the beginning the makers maintained that OMG! OH MY GOD is a novel script and unlike other conventional Bollywood films has no heroine. Hence it came as a surprise when earlier this week, a leading daily reported that Sonakshi has now landed a role in the film as she too wished to be a part of it. The article further reported that last week when Sonakshi along with her family went to see Paresh Rawal's play on which the film is based, she caused a delay of over two hours due to late arrival.

But the production house, Grazing Goat Pictures immediately took to social media and clarified the report, "Now before you reach for your newspaper, we had a quick clarification to make. As reported in one of the dailies, Sonakshi Sinha doesn't have any scenes in OMG! OH MY GOD. She is only doing the special song,'Go Go Govinda'." 

Also last week when she came to watch Paresh Rawal's play, 'Kishan Vs Kanhaiya', Sonakshi and her family were in their seats way in advance before the show started.

Mumbai: Though every season of the popular game show 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' brings in socially relevant themes, host Amitabh Bachchan says the game show is not the solution for all problems.

With 'power of knowledge' as the basis, the makers announced 'Sirf Gyaan Hi Aapko Aapka Haq Dilata Hai' as the show's communication theme for the upcoming sixth season. Talking about why many educated people in the country were still unemployed, Big B said, "That the government knows.

"We have used the tagline 'Sirf Gyaan Hi Aapko Aapka Haq Dilata Hai' for our show by which we mean that those who are educated get this platform, and if one is selected then he/she should try luck and win some amount."

First aired in 2000 on TV, KBC is the Indian version of the UK game show 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire?' The theme 'Koi Sawaal Chota Nahi Hota' in the fourth

season became immensely popular and was later replaced as 'Koi Insaan Chota Nahi Hota' in its fifth version.

"It would be wrong to say that KBC has taken responsibility of solving issues. The government and the corporates should do it. And they are working towards it," Bachchan said. However, the 69-year-old actor says his heart goes out to

the needy people who come on the show. "When a contestant is sitting in front of me and I hear their part of story, the struggle that they go through... I control my emotions. It is heart wrenching," he said.

When asked how people from places without cell phone connectivity come on the show, Big B Said, "KBC can't solve all problems. On a personal level we do whatever we can through the way of charity, but I don't like to talk about

charity."

Though KBC's new brand-campaign appears to be close on the heels of Aamir Khan's 'Satyameva Jayate', the makers deny it. "There is no similarity with 'Satyameva Jayate'. We are not positioning our show in the same way," said Siddhartha Basu, the CEO of BIG Synergy.

The show's sixth season will be aired on Sony from September 7.

MS Dhoni warns teammates against taking Kiwi pacers lightly

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni today cautioned his teammates from taking New Zealand lightly and said the visiting team's pacers would look to exploit the overcast conditions during the second Test match, starting here tomorrow.

"New Zealand is a good bowling side and will come up with good bowling plan by exploiting the overcast conditions at Chinnaswamy stadium. The first spell will be really crucial for both sides," Dhoni told reporters.

"Indian batsmen have to negotiate their pace and they have to get as many wickets as possible," he added.

Kiwi pacers had managed to pick up wickets even on the Hyderabad track, which did not assist the fast bowlers much.

Dhoni informed that he has requested the groundsmen here to make a turning track, but said that the batsmen will have to play on whatever pitch is given to them.

"The subcontinental speciality should be spin and I think we should stick to it," he said.

Asked if he expected any change in the wicket that still has a tinge of grass on it, Dhoni said it is up to the groundsmen to do the changes.

"They are still working on it," he said.

Praising spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha who shared 18 wickets between them in the previous Test, Dhoni said that he would like to get some more assistance from the pitch for his bowlers.

"Ravichandran Ashwin bowled brilliantly and Pragyan Ojha had to keep it tight. I personally felt if we get a bit more spin and bounce for our spinners it will be really good." Asked if he was experimenting when he decided to send Cheteshwar Pujara one down, Dhoni said the Saurashtrian would bat at number three, while Virat Kohli would retain his spot.

On Pujara's injury, Dhoni said, "The good thing is that he has batted and fielded today in the nets. So things are looking good," he said.

Dhoni also said the team is not keen on experimenting during the Bangalore Test and would field the best combination after having a final look at the wicket tomorrow morning, before the start of play.

On whether Sachin Tendulkar was enjoying playing with youngsters, Dhoni said that he was happy, but people jump to conclusions even if the veteran batsman scores a 40 or a 50.

"He is enjoying his cricket, which is very important. When he turns up on the field he wants to improve," he said.

Dhoni revealed that he was thinking of donning a new role in the team of playing along with tailenders to frustrate the opponents.

"If the last three or four batsmen contribute, it is frustrating for the opponents and at the same time you add on to the total," he said.

Dhoni said he was not overconfident after his team's win over the New Zealanders in the first Test.

"Whatever we did right in the first Test we have to repeat it. We will try to stick to our basics, try to keep things simple. We don't complicate things and try to put pressure on the opposition," said Dhoni.
