18-year battle of a Man for Rs 9

Sanjay Kothari, an advocate by profession, filed a petition against MTNL for charging extra service tax of Rs 9 on his telephone bill in 1994. The case was later forwarded to High Court and then to Supreme Court, but the petitioner has never given up.

After 18 years, Sanjay finally got what he is waiting for: A refund cheque of Rs 9 from the MTNL. "It's a matter of principal," says Sanjay, when asked why he fought the long battle just for Rs 9. The petitioner first realized that he was wrongly charged (Rs 9) by looking at the fine print of his telephone bill (Rs 340) in 1994.

Sanjay also filed a contempt petition against MTNL for failing to refund the refund of Rs 9 to 1.8 lakh other consumers as ordered by the Bombay high court in the year 2010. "I could fight for myself as I'm an advocate. But, what about Common Man," he points out. If every citizen thinks in the same fashion, India could be a corruption-free and developed country very soon. Hats off to Sanjay!!
