The last time Georgia came off a big SEC win, the Bulldogs were flat the next game. That could be behind one of the big early line moves for the Week 6 college football card.
Wynn Las Vegas opened No. 6 Georgia (3-1 SU, 1-2-1 ATS) as a 12.5-point favorite at Tennessee (3-2 SU, 2-3 ATS). Bettors jumped on the Volunteers, slashing the line to 11 as of Monday morning.
“It could be the letdown factor,” John Avello, executive director of the Wynn’s race and sports book, told The Linemakers on Sporting News. “(Georgia) seemed to have a letdown after the South Carolina game when they played North Texas.”
Georgia failed to cover 33.5 points against the Mean Green, winning, 45-21, two weeks after the Bulldogs’ rousing 41-30 win over South Carolina. (Georgia had an off week in between).
On Saturday, Aaron Murray threw four touchdown passes, including the game-winning 25-yarder with 1:47 left, in a 44-41 home win over LSU. Now Georgia faces a Tennessee team that’s 3-0 at home, albeit against lesser competition.
The Bulldogs have won four of the last five meetings with the Vols but have covered just twice. Georgia running back Todd Gurley (450 rushing yards, 6.3 yards per carry, 5 touchdowns) is day-to-day with a sprained ankle.
Other early moves:
• Utah State went from a 4.5- to a 6-point home favorite over BYU on Friday. The Aggies are 5-0 ATS (1-4 SU) in the last five meetings; each time they were underdogs.
• San Diego State dropped from a 6.5- to a 4.5-point home favorite over Nevada, also on Friday.
• No. 1 Alabama is laying 56.5 to Georgia State after opening at 57.5. “This is a ridiculous game,” Avello said. “I don’t know why Georgia State is on the schedule.”
• No. 3 Clemson opened as a 14.5-point favorite at Syracuse and was bet down to 13.5. “This one will go back up as we get closer to gametime,” Avello said.
• No. 2 Oregon dropped from a 40-point favorite to 38.5 at Colorado. The Ducks (4-0 SU, 4-0 ATS) are one of eight teams without an ATS loss. “I lose on Oregon every week,” Avello said, noting the book lost several ways on Oregon’s 55-16 win over Cal. “I’m not a big Oregon fan right now.”
• Central Florida dropped from a 12.5- to a 10.5-point favorite at Memphis. “Central Florida is a good team that took South Carolina to the brink,” Avello said. The Tigers, however, had a week off after a 31-7 home win over Arkansas State.
• Penn State opened as a 4.5-point favorite at Indiana and was bet down a point. The Nittany Lions have won 14 straight meetings, going 8-5-1 ATS. The Hoosiers were off last week and will be playing their fifth straight home game to start the season.
• No. 5 Stanford was bet down from a 7.5- to a 7-point favorite against No. 15 Washington. “Washington is improved, but can they hold up?” Avello said. The Cardinal is trying to avenge last year’s 17-13 road loss, which snapped a four-game SU and ATS win streak in the series.
• No. 4 Ohio State is holding as a 5.5-point favorite at No. 16 Northwestern, but Avello can see this line hitting 6 late in the week.
• No. 17 Baylor has been bet up a point and is now laying 28 to West Virginia. “Baylor can score with the best of ‘em,” Avello said. “I’d love to see a Baylor-Oregon game; I’d have to put up a total of 110. West Virginia played a real good game against Oklahoma State, but they can throw in some clunkers.”
• No. 11 Oklahoma, coming off a big win at Notre Dame, was bet down a half-point and is laying 10.5 to TCU.
